This month I was excited to receive my first Illumicrate subscription box through the post. For those of you who are not aware, Illumicrate is a new, quarterly subscription box service for book lovers with boxes arriving in February, May, August and November. Illumicrate costs £29.99 per box which includes free shipping in the UK. There are additional shipping costs applied for international customers.
There were two reasons which prompted me to subscribe. Firstly, I love the idea of subscription boxes and receiving surprise goodies through the post. Secondly, I don’t tend to read a lot of Young Adult fiction and the books featured in Illumicrate are predominately Young Adult. Therefore I felt this was a great way for me to discover new books that I might have otherwise overlooked, safe in the knowledge that these have been carefully chosen for book lovers by book lovers.
Without further ado, check out below what was included in February’s box!
This month’s book was Truthwitch, the first book in the Witchlands series by Susan Dennard. This is a lovely hardback edition with great cover art and metallic lettering (I love a shiny cover!) Below is further information about the story from the inside jacket cover:
‘In a continent on the edge of war, two witches hold its fate in their hands.
Young witches Safiya and Iseult have a habit of finding trouble. After clashing with a powerful Guildmaster and his ruthless Bloodwitch bodyguard, the friends are forced to flee their home.
Safi must avoid capture at all costs as she’s a rare Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lies. Many would kill for her magic, so Safi must keep it hidden – lest she be used in the struggle between empires. And Iseult’s true powers are hidden even from herself…’
I had not heard of this novel before but it certainly sounds intriguing so will look forward to reading this. Also included for this book was a card with a message to Illumicrate subscribers from Susan Dennard, a bookmark and a signed bookplate which was lovely to have.
Along with a book each month, each box contains a selection of book themed gifts. My favourite of these was a bookcase printed pouch by Elena Illustration. I really loved the design on this and it would make a perfect pencil case or make-up bag. This also fits in nicely with the three pencils included from Pobble and Ping. I have always been a fan of stationary so these are nice to have. They are bold and shiny and stamped with the following bookish quotes:
‘A good book has no ending’
‘Read. Write. Repeat’
‘I’d rather be reading’
Next up there is a set of two magnetic book marks by BeeDoo which are always handy for book lovers! These are particularly sweet designs, one featuring a love heart and another with a ship. There was also a scented candle from Simple Candle Co. I didn’t spot this at first but this candle is one of four different scents inspired by the parallel Londons featured in V. E. Schwab’s Darker Shades of Magic series.
The box also featured a few extra promotional items. There was a recipe for lemonade on an advert for My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick. There was a canvas tote bag (not pictured) and bookmark for The It Girl by Katy Birchall and a bookmark and two badges from The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman.
All in all I was impressed by this box. I have already discovered a new author and have a new story to read that I would have otherwise not come across. In addition I will certainly be making use of the bookcase pouch and candle with the pencils and bookmarks sure to come in handy too. It is hard to believe that this is only the second Illumicrate box judging by its quality. Daphne, the book blogger who created this box has done an excellent job and it’s clear a lot of love and thought went into the selection. Also, I love the bold, bright branding which looks professional and certainly brightened my Monday morning when it arrived on my doorstep. I am now looking forward to what May’s box has in store!
