Fairy Loot Unboxing – May 2017

Today I am very excited to be unboxing the May Fairy Loot! Fairy Loot is a monthly subscription box focusing on Young Adult fantasy titles. You can get a single box for £26 per month (plus VAT and shipping) or you can choose to subscribe for 3 or 6 months.

I have been getting Fairy Loot for six months now and I have always been impressed with the quality of the items and how well they fit in with the theme. The theme for the May box was ‘Warriors and Legends’ and here is what was inside!

fairylootmay2 (2)The first item was from a supplier that had been revealed – a candle from In The Wick Of Time. I received a ‘Mist’ candle which was one of two types sent out that are relevant to the book of the month. This was a nice compact size and smells great with its stone and woodsmoke scent. Then there was a wearable item in the form of socks! These were a celtic warrior design and were created exclusively for the box by Fairy Loot! I really liked the design and am always happy to receive a nice pair of socks.

fairylootmay3 (2)Another supplier revealed for this box was Ink and Wonder. They created an exclusive woodmark for this box featuring a quote from Lord Of The Rings. This was a beautiful item, I really like the quality and the design is gorgeous and I have never had a wooden bookmark before. I have actually ordered two more woodmarks from Ink and Wonder so am even more excited for their arrival having seen this one. One thing that always goes nicely with a book is a cup of tea and the next item was some loose leaf tea from The Tea Leaf Co who have created a blend of green tea with lychee and jasmine. This was presented in a beautiful tin that I am going to keep hold of, it features a quote which I recognise too, possibly Mulan I think!

fairylootmay4 (2)There was a bonus book this month with the inclusion of ‘World Mythology: In bite-sized chunks’ by Mark Daniels. This was a really interesting item that I am going to dip in and out of over the coming months (although my boyfriend grabbed it straight away so may have to wrestle it back from him first!). It looks to be a fascinating read and the cover design is gorgeous too. And speaking of gorgeous, I have a new favourite pen! This feather quill pen was supplied by Flora’s Wonder Emporium and I believe there were a few different colours sent out. Mine was a fab metallic blue!

fairylootmay5 (2)And now it is time for this month’s book which was to my delight, Flame In The Mist by Renee Ahdieh. Here is a little about the book from the inside cover:

‘The only daughter of a prominent Samurai, Mariko has always known that being a woman means she’s not in control of her fate. Never mind her cunning or her skills as an accomplished alchemist, Mariko was raised for one purpose only: to marry.

At just seventeen years old, Mariko is sent to the imperial palace to meet her betrothed, a man she did not choose. But the journey is cut short when her convoy is ambushed by the Black Clan – a group of bandits hired to kill Mariko before she reaches the palace.

The lone survivor of the attack, Mariko swears revenge on those who want her dead: she infiltrates the Black clan disguised as a peasant boy and befriends their leader. The clan warms to Mariko, impressed by her intellect and ingenuity – but as she gets closer to her enemies, Mariko uncovers a dark history of secrets that will force her to question everything she’s ever known’

I have been very excited about this book as it is a retelling of Mulan which was one of my favourite Disney films when I was younger. Accompanying the book there was a letter from the author, a bookmark and a signed bookplate. There was also the regular ‘Fairy Scoop’ leaflet featuring an author interview, and the reading buddy card featuring a unique hashtag enabling you to share your views on the book with another reader. And we also received the collectable bookmark which matches the monthly artwork which was introduced last month.

I loved the ‘Warriors and Legends’ box and was once again impressed at the quality and variety of items featured as well as the book itself which sounds fantastic. Thank you Fairy Loot! The theme for the June box is ‘Elementalists’ which I am intrigued about so be sure to check back next month to see what’s inside!
