Did You See Melody? by Sophie Hannah

Sophie Hannah was an author I had heard of but whose books I hadn’t yet got round to reading. So when I received a copy of her latest novel, Did You See Melody? in my November box from My Chronicle Book Box, I couldn’t wait to read it!

This story begins with Cara Burrows, a wife and mother who finds herself at breaking point. A difficult situation at home leads to Cara leaving her family behind to spend some time alone. She opts for a luxury spa resort, one which she can barely afford but offers the relaxation she needs to come to terms with the significant life changes ahead of her. But a relaxing break soon turns to something far more sinister, when she sees something, someone, she couldn’t possibly have seen. A mistake from a hotel receptionist results in her stepping into the wrong room, a room in which she sees a teenage girl who resembles Melody Chapa, a girl who was believed to have been killed years previously, with her parents serving life sentences for her murder. This raises questions over the identity of the girl, and to whether or not it was Melody that Cara saw. And as Cara begins to piece things together with the help of evidence gathered at the time of her disappearance, it signals the beginning of her journey to find the truth, putting herself in danger in the process…

I really enjoyed this book and found it to be a tense and gripping psychological thriller. The case of Melody Chapa is an interesting one and I liked the gradual build up of information and how Cara’s experiences are interspersed with extracts from television interviews and documents which help build up the picture of this extraordinary case. The characters themselves were complex and interesting and I was kept guessing throughout as to who could be trusted. This is a well plotted and expertly written thriller and I thought it was perfectly paced with just the right amount of twists and turns along the way. I was hooked until the end and the ending itself was one that I loved, and one that lingered in my mind afterwards, I was a little sad it had come to an end!

Did You See Melody? is an entertaining read and a gripping crime thriller. Having enjoyed this so much I would be happy to read another of Sophie Hannah’s books!
